The Evolution of an Avatar

I’m always fascinated by the creative process. Part of my commitment to being a featured creator in the FFC Fantasy Faire was to provide two items as RFL donations to raise funds for cancer research. Originally I had planned to use a cute set of demon wings as one of the donations. However, I was so pleased with the wings that I felt they needed a faery to go with them. And so, the concept of the little demon faery was born.

I added the wings to my faery base, then thought, hmmm:  she needs a demon skin. So off into Photoshop I went, to create a suitable skin for a little demon faery. I soon discovered that shading and lighting a deep red skin was quite the task! But I was pleased with the results as I watched little Mona emerge.

Once I had a wings and skin, I realized that she wouldn’t be a little demon without horns and tail. So I hunted in my inventory for a tail I had made, converted it to one suitable for demon, and voila — with a new leathery texture and a few tweaks to the wag script, Mona had a scripted demon tail. The final touch involved creating demon horns and putting them on her forehead. To do that, I googled a number of demon costume images to see how the horns were created and placed. I soon discovered that there didn’t seem to be a “right”  way to style or position the horns, so I created a set that would look right on a cute little demon faery. Thus was born a friendly little demon faery, half demon and half fae.
